The lastest single from cabaret mistress of ceremonies Susy Blue, AKA singer Susan Hull, “Circus” is a rather charming release. Conjuring up memories and, at times, even smells, of a circus such as fairy floss and popcorn, this is a track that stays on the right side of annoying, which it could have become very easily. Blue’s voice is feather light and something of an aquired taste; think Laura Marling and Joanna Newsom.

It is refreshing that Blue takes her influences and truly makes them her own. Other influences, such as folk and jazz, are never too far from the surface. The second track on this single release, “Zululand”, sees Blue in a very relaxed vocal style and mood, recalling Eddie Reader, former lead singer of one-hit Eighties wonders Fairground Attraction – not a bad thing.

Miss Blue is defintely a talent to watch going by this single release and hopefully a forthcoming album.
