Back in April, we discovered that English film director Edgar Wright is a huge fan of King Gizzard. Now, the Baby Driver filmaker has delivered a playlist of his favourite tunes of the year, featuring a whole bunch of Aussie acts in there.

Earlier this year, Edgar Wright took to Twitter to espouse his love of the poetry in King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s lyrics – namely the repetitive nature of “Rattlesnake, rattles me”. Soon enough, fans were shocked to learn just how much the director loved the Melbourne musos, even going so far as to meet them when he was in the country on a promo tour.

Then, while being interviewed by triple j, Wright admitted that not only was he a fan of a lot more Aussie acts than we had previously thought, but he would love to use some of it in an upcoming film. “If there was a Baby Driver sequel,” he said. “I would make one just so I could use ‘Gamma Knife’ in the car chase… What a song!”

Well, now Edgar Wright has gone one further and decided to show the world the sort of Aussie talent that is out there.

Taking to Spotify, Wright created a playlist of his favourite songs from 2017. In addition to the understandable inclusions of Kendrick Lamar, LCD Soundsystem, Beck, and Drake, the director also found room in his top 50 to add in some Aussie acts.

As well as King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Wright also picked songs from the likes of Courtney Barnett, Methyl Ethel, Pond, and even the highly divisive Confidence Man, proving that Edgar Wright likes to surprise his listeners as much as his viewers.

While we’re not quite sure when we’re going to get Baby Driver 2, we’re definitely excited at the idea of the film’s soundtrack including bands like King Gizzard. Now that we know the other Aussie acts that Edgar Wright is into, we’re pretty sure that the upcoming soundtrack is going to be the best compilation of Australian tunes we’ve ever seen.
