Sure we’ve heard about you before, but we think it’s time for Tone Deaf to get to know you a little better. Slip in to something comfortable while we put on some music, pour us a couple of drinks and turn the lights down low. So, tell us about yourselves…Who are you – who who? We really wanna know….

Who are you and what do you do in your act?

I’m Glenn Evans, I play drums in Fangs.

‘Fess up. What records have you stolen from your parent’s record collection and why?

Ya know I can remember constantly telling my old man that his music was rubbish when I was a kid…when he ‘updated’ to an iPod last year I took about 60 records home, stacks of Bob Dylan stuff, Tom Waits stuff, Pink Floyd stuff, Beatles stuff. My face was pretty fuckin red when I thanked him for those. It’s funny how your taste in music changes over time.

What’s on heavy rotation on your iPod right now?

Just picked up a few newies the other day, the Kim Salmon and Mudhoney record, the new Nevermind box set, OFF!’s first four EP’s, and The Drones new live LP. There all copping a fair spin right now.

‘Home taping is killing the music business was the catch-cry of the record industry in the 1970s, but it managed to survive until now. What do you think is the difference between mates taping copies of friend’s records back in the 80s and 90s and file sharing now?

I guess my vibe is this: If someone illegally downloads or copies an album, loves it, buys tickets to the gigs, buys a t-shirt, tells all their mates who do the same…then who really gives a shit if they got the album for free?

You must answer this question honestly or we steal your rider. What was the first gig you went to? Where was it and what was the venue?

I think the first gig I went to was H-block 101 and Mach Pelican at Mooroolbark community centre when I was about 15. I don’t mind saying that at all because I still listen to both those bands now!

What’s your favourite site to download music from and do you ever pay for it? Can we find any of your releases there?

We have all our stuff up at Fangs’ Bandcamp. We name our price for the songs ($1 per track usually) and you can download them in a million different formats. When people buy stuff, we get the whole amount, if you’re going to buy something off a band it’s nice to know the money is putting fuel in their car and not going elsewhere.

What artist made you want to pick up an instrument and/or sing?

Originally it was Ross from Bodyjar. I saw them play (I think it was my second or third gig) and decided that the drums would do me very nicely. Of course that doesn’t go down well with the folks, but I ended up winning.

Have you ever been arrested?

Nah no problems so far.

Do you have any particular ritual before you go on stage, or even a lucky charm you take with you?

Not really, I haven’t got anything exiting for this one. I just like to chill out and have a few beers.

What’s been your most outrageous rider request?

Usually we’re pretty stoked if our rider is any more than a few drink cards at the bar…so we haven’t really pushed that one yet.

Because it’s more fun to do things together, which living Australian artist would you most like to collaborate with? Tell us why?

I’d probably say Nick Cave; his back catalogue speaks for itself as far as songwriting and lyrics, but I like that he seems to keep reinventing and rejuvenating himself with new projects. Can’t say Fangs will be getting an email from his manager anytime soon…but it’s a nice thought!

Right, let’s get really intimate. Tell us what releases you have that we can listen to with the lights down low, or even better, where we can see you play in person next.

Our new single Monsters is out now on CD/Vinyl/Digital. You can get a digital copy from Fangs’ Bandcamp or get a hard copy right here. (Mind you, Tone Deaf are giving them away for free too, the cheapskates).

You can catch us launching ‘Monsters’ at Cherry Bar on November 25th with Money For Rope and Without Wolves and then we head off to play a few other shows – Wollongong, Sydney, Gosford check out all the details! Hope to see you at one of the shows!

Tone Deaf are giving readers a chance to get into the Cherry Bar gig for nought! And there’s singles to be won too. Hoot!
