We might be getting close to the end of summer in Australia, but there’s still a chance to end it on a high.

Summersault Festival Caroline Springs takes place this Saturday. It’s a FREE festival with fun and entertainment for the whole family. With a lineup of some of the hottest musicians plus market stalls, exhibitions, and carnival rides and amusements, there’s a lot on offer for every kind of punter.

Because it’s an all-ages affair, we had a chat with three of the biggest names on the Summersault bill – Ngaiire, Justice Crew and the Pierce Brothers – to tell us all about their first gigs. Because no-one ever forgets their first time.

Justice Crew

“Some of the first show we ever saw were: Green Day, they were the first act that showed us how music could make a difference socially and politically.

The Black Eyed Peas, WOW they showed how hip hop music could be mainstream pop music- they have created a whole song book of new Anthems, and finally Chris Brown – what an awesome singer and then you see his dance- only Michael Jackson had as much stage presence as a dancer!”

Ngaiire

“My parents were really big on taking me and my brother to the ballet and the opera when we were kids in New Zealand and then we moved to Papua New Guinea where the only exposure I had gotten to live music were US college big bands who visited our school whilst on tour from the States. I didn’t really get to see a proper music concert till I was about 16 or 17.

I’d only spent a year in Australia by that point but a friend of mine was adamant that I go with her to see a Machine Gun Felatio all ages gig at Ballina RSL. We walked in just in time to witness someone dry humping a giant sheep with a baby’s head. My world was officially turned upside down.

I went home that night trying not to accidentally sing, ‘I’ll give your c*#k a big long suck and you’ll give me a good hard ‘f*%k’ in front of my mother. Use your inner voice Ngaiire. Inner voice. It was around that time that I developed a ludicrous fascination with phallic symbols and the male genitalia and made my Visual Arts major work a study on the male penis. My poor mum. The lounge room became my art studio so that would have been interesting when she had visitors over. Love you mum!”

“We were 14 when we were allowed to go to our first concert. During Metallica’s 2003 St Anger tour. We had tickets with some mates and were dropped off at the Tan track next to Myer Music Bowl and headed in. Mum came back to pick us up afterwards.

Now, we were pretty sheltered lads, so we had stayed away from alcohol or anything, but I remember these guys rolling the biggest joint I’ve ever seen, and at the time I’d never seen or smelt it. Anyway, I was amazed and went and told jack and we just watched. Later in the car on the way home we remarked about it, she laughed and told us she’d grown up in the 70s and it really wasn’t impressive.

The music on the night was electric, we lost each other pretty fast in the mosh, yet since we were so small we had the legends in the mosh hoisting us up and crowd surfing. It was definitely one of the best nights we’d experienced up until that point!”
