US post-punk legends Interpol have well and truly made their return, performing ‘The Rover’ – their first new song in four years – on US TV recently.

Last month, Interpol revealed that their new album, their first since 2014’s El Pintor, was close to being done. With fans anticipating some news soon, the group last week announced that their sixth album was to be titled Marauder, and would be released on August 24th.

Marauder is a facet of myself,” explained frontman Paul Banks in a press release. “That’s the guy that fucks up friendships and does crazy shit. He taught me a lot, but it’s representative of a persona that’s best left in song. In a way, this album is like giving him a name and putting him to bed.”

“This record is where I feel touching on real things that have happened to me are exciting and evocative to write about,” he continued. “I think in the past, I always felt autobiography was too small a thing for me to reference. I feel like now, I’m able to romanticize parts of my own life.”

To complement this news, the group also released their first new piece of music in four years, lead single ‘The Rover’.

Now, appearing on US late-night talk show The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Friday night, the group made their first live appearance since October, giving ‘The Rover’ its live premiere.

An angular post-punk jam, it’s a true return to form for the New York trio who have spent the last year touring relentlessly in support of the fifteenth anniversary of their critically-acclaimed debut, Turn On The Bright Lights.

Interpol’s last album, El Pintor, was released in September of 2014, putting an end to their longest gap between albums at that point. The release of this album also saw the group visit Australia for the last time, with the band announced for the Splendour In The Grass lineup that year, though that was their only show in the country that time around.

Here’s hoping that if this new album sees its release soon, it might be followed by another long-overdue Aussie tour.
