Jack White has dipped into his bag of tricks once again, this time pulling out a cover of Pearl Jam’s 1993 track ‘Daughter’.

Last week, Seattle grunge legends Pearl Jam decided to treat their fans with a pair of hometown shows, their first in the city in five years. While these performances happened to feature a large amount of special guests, the group also dished out a bunch of covers as well.

In addition to covering artists like Chris Cornell, Iggy Pop, and Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam also brought out a cover of The White Stripes’ classic tune ‘We Are Going To Be Friends’. Now, Jack White has returned the favour.

While performing in Seattle on Monday night, Jack White decided to pay tribute to one of the city’s most prominent bands, delivering a faithful rendition of their 1993 single, ‘Daughter’.

Of course, if you’re listening to that and wondering about its questionable quality, considering that Jack White is a noted critic of phones at his gigs, it’s a wonder we managed to hear anything at all.

At all of his recent shows, White has required that fans put their devices into a Yondr pouch, which locks the phone away until they can be reopened after the show. Clearly, the person who recorded this cover was dedicated enough to somehow record from inside the pouch.

Earlier this year, the musician opened up about his decision to ban phones from his gigs, explaining that it’s turned into an “interesting art experiment”.

“I really react to the crowd, just like a stand-up comedian would,” White explained to Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. “If I finish a song and go, ‘Ta-da!’, and it’s crickets, I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t know what to do now.’ Am I supposed to play a heavier song, a faster song? Do you want me to play acoustic? Do you want me to leave? I’ll leave!’”

“But what I don’t like is, ‘Is that how they really feel, or are they just not even paying attention because they’re not engaged… because they’re texting?’”

“When you go to a movie theatre, a symphony, church, whatever – there are all these moments in life where people put those away and engage,” White continued.

“And I love the idea of rock concerts being punk as hell and there are no rules. I love that. But I don’t like the idea that I have no idea what to play next. And I need that. Because I’ve walked offstage before like, ‘Man, I don’t know what to do anymore. If this is how it’s going to be from now on, it’s going to be very difficult’.”
