Jack White is one of modern music’s most esteemed figures, so although he may have some slightly backward ways of thinking when it comes to phone usage,  his ability to work within different styles is admirable.

In the lead up to the release of his new album, ‘Boarding House Reach’ on March 23, the iconic muso chatted with Rolling Stone to discuss the sound and inspiration behind the new album. Having already released the three singles, ‘Corporation’,  ‘Connected By Love’ and ‘Respect Commander’.

White discussed how he took on the help of a slew of new musicians for the album, including some who had previously worked with Jay-Z, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar.

“The entire record, to me, is incredibly modern. I wanted to take punk, hip-hop and rock & roll, and funnel it all into a 2018 time capsule” said White explaining the direction of the album.

He also went on to discuss how the album also features previously recorded tracks initially intended for the White Stripes and The Raconteurs, as well as a collaborative track with Jay-Z.

“It was sort of my white whale,” he said about the track named ‘Over and Over’. “I chased it and chased it, and finally, all of a sudden, it worked.”

“I’ve always made it my job to push myself into uncomfortable situations. If you’re an artist, your job’s not to make life easier on yourself and make other people do your work for you. I’ve never been a fan of people who do that, and I don’t respect that sort of way of attacking music”
