Buddy Holly’s 50s rock n’ roll classic ‘Rave On’ has been recorded by The Stokes’ front man Julian Casablancas  for a tribute album to mark what would have been the bespectacled star’s 75th birthday. Holly tragically died in a light airplane crash in 1959, along with fellow pioneering rock stars the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. Entitled Rave On Buddy Holly, the 19 track compilation features appearances from the likes of Lou Reed doing ‘Peggy Sue’ to Cee-Lo Green covering

On February 3rd 1959, Holly, Latino Valens and the Big Bopper would all meet their deaths along with the aeroplane pilot, as they attempted to make a gig via light plane in another city through a snowstorm. Songwriter Don McLean would later write his hit song ‘American Pie’ about the event, declaring that the death of these artists was ‘the day the music died’. Texan rocker Holly has been revered by artists as diverse as the New York Dolls to The Smiths as his short lived fame was eclipsed by his legend after his death.
