“We’re The Kilniks, and we like to party!”
The Kilniks are a 5-piece indie rock band from the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, who like to rock out at a live music venue near you.  After the release of their debut EP in 2011, the gang returned to the studio to record two new singles, which they launched in August.  This year The Kilniks have been hitting venues across the city bringing themed parties from Mexican to Woodstock, as well as playing support slots for their friends and colleagues.  Ready and raring to get into their double denim, The Kilniks will be hitting the stage for NMIT’s ‘Nevermind the 90’s Tour’, Oct 19, 26 and Nov 2.

You recently played a Jungle themed show, tell what inspired this?

We go offered a residency at the Noise Bar to throw a themed party/gig once a month for 4 months.  When thinking of ideas, the thought of turning the band room into a giant jungle definitely seemed like fun.  We also blacked out the room, put in UV and lead lights to make it a glow in the dark Jungle.  Pretty sure it was the coolest thing we have done as a band.

You’re about to take part in Nevermind The 90’s series, what songs should we expect to hear in your live set?

Though Nat kept begging us to cover Destiny’s Child, you will be hearing a lot of 90’s Grunge.  Expect Spiderbait, Blur, Supergrass, Nirvana and as well as a few of our own tracks.

Will you be dressing in 90’s get up? If so what are you planning to wear, if not what would you like to wear from the 90’s?

Liam (our guitarist) told us that he went through a really big Kurt Cubain stage, and he tried to look like him through his teenage years.  So expect Liam to whip out the green cardigan and blonde wig.

Who are your top five 90’s artists in no particular order and why?

Nirvana – They wrote the anthem of a generation.

Oasis – Wonderwall will never get old.

Blue – a more energetic song would be hard to find.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers – self explanatory

Silverchair – Daniel Johns…

What’s your earliest memory of performing and who inspired you to start?

My earliest memory is music concerts at my primary school. I remember rocking out ‘Botany Bay’ on the piano at my first recital. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, nothing gets more hectic than that right? Well you’d be right. I guess later on I starting listening what you’d call “rock” music and start playing in that genre, but really the only reason I continue performing is to top the awesomeness of those primary school concerts. So far, no luck unfortunately.

What and where was the first gig you went to?

My first proper rock gig was Green Day in year seven at Telstra Dome (PLEASE don’t judge me). But earlier than that were the awe-inspiring series of Wiggles concerts I went to as a little kid. Honestly, I’d say they still rank as some of the best gigs I’ve ever been to. Seriously, how many other bands can get the entire audience to wake up their narcoleptic band mate so enthusiastically? Love em.

What’s on heavy rotation on your iPod right now?

I’ve been listening to a lot of The Kills lately, also a bit of Queens of the Stone Age, Iggy Pop/The Stooges and Pulp. But yeah, honestly it varies day to day.

Do you have any particular ritual before you go on stage, or even a lucky charm you take with you?

We some times do tequila shots before the set, and Alex (our drummer) usually watches and laughs. Beside that we do a bit of the old group ‘hands in’ type deal if we feel it’s a special occasion, but really we just get up and play.

If you could curate your own festival, where would it be, who would be on the bill, how many people would you let in and what features would it have?

Honestly, the best ‘festival’ for us would be at the local park on sunny day, with all our favourite local bands in a big day line-up. Lots of beer, good friends and good music. That would be pretty awesome.

Where we can see you play next, what releases do you have available and where can we get them?

October 19th at Revolver upstairs, October 26th at the Noise bar and November 2nd at the National in Geelong.  This will be a part of NMIT’s ‘Nevermind the 90’s Tour’.  We are so super pumped!
