Singer-songwriter Kim Churchill has dropped a string of announcements on us this morning, with the news that he’s not only got a new album on the way, but will also be launching into a big tour soon afterwards, taking in capital cities and regional centres along the way.

The new record Weight_Falls see its worldwide release on Friday August 25, and will include the single ‘Breakneck Speed’ you may have heard doing the rounds on triple j earlier in the year, as well as the follow-up ‘Second Hand Car’, which was premiered on the station last night.

Churchill has long been a favourite with triple j listeners, breaking into everyone’s eardrums with 2014’s ‘Window To The Sky’, which made it all the way to #42 on that year’s Hottest 100 countdown. While he’s carried over many of the elements that won him his fans to begin with, he also points to plenty of “growing up” in the intervening years, which included highlights like performing at Glastonbury.

In fact, by the time he’d recorded the follow up to his debut Silence/Win, he already felt he’d outgrown it, and quickly went back to the drawing board, rewriting it in the space of a week.

“I worked really hard on the follow-up record for a long time, and it sounded good,” he says. “But some very subtle layer of my consciousness was saying to me, ‘It’s not all that inspiring.’”

Judging from the response to the first couple of singles, the reworked version should be right on the money when it hits on August 25. He’ll be launching it across the country throughout September and October, with tickets on sale now.
