To many it may seem like an impossible task, but for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, the notion of releasing five albums in a year is not beyond the realm of possibility. In fact, while some were doubting the band’s plan would come to fruition, the group left it until the last day of the year to prove the doubters wrong, releasing Gumboot Soup overnight.

Following four albums this year, including Microtonal BananaMurder Of The UniverseSketches Of Brunswick East, and Polygondwanaland, the band had already released a major stack of music, so we wouldn’t have blamed them if they just wanted to take a breather and focus on their touring commitments.

Earlier this month, frontman St Mackenzie had promised fans that the band’s fifth record was still on the way, stating “the last one is still coming together, but it’s definitely less “themed” like the other four have been.”

Then, to help get fans excited, the group recently dropped a number of singles, including ‘All Is Known’, ‘Beginner’s Luck’, and ‘Green House‘, which has since been renamed ‘Greenhouse Heat Death’. But the question that still remained was, when is the album dropping? With limited days left in the year, fans were understandably getting antsy.

However, yesterday afternoon, the group finally broke their silence by posting the announcement that “our new album Gumboot Soup is coming out tomorrow,” before the record was released at midnight.

If you’re keen to grab a copy, the new album is already streaming over on King Gizzard’s Bandcamp page right now, but you can also pre-order a copy of the limited edition, coloured vinyl over at Flightless Records.

While many may have wondered just about whether or not King Gizzard were going to be able to tackle the monumental task of releasing five full-length records in a year, all while dealing with the trials and tribulations of international touring, the band have done it. If this doesn’t put them in the running for an ARIA Hall of Fame spot one day, nothing will.
