The KLF might be well known for their enigmatic actions throughout their career, but their latest stunt is definitely a bit on the morbid side.

If you’re not familiar with The KLF, they’re the British duo who were responsible for a number of huge hits, including ‘Last Train To Trancentral’, ‘3 a.m. Eternal’, and ‘Doctorin’ The Tardis’ as The Timelords.

Of course, they also made headlines for some rather strange reasons, including recalling their album due to uncleared samples, breaking up at the 1992 BRIT Awards, and burning one million pounds, just because they could.

However, following their long-awaited reunion last year, it seems that the band have plans that extend far beyond this life.

As Pitchfork reports, The KLF’s Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond have announced plans to build a pyramid that utilises the ashes of 34,592 dead people.

So what’s involved in this process? Well, according to the band’s website, fans are able to bequeath their ashes to The KLF (who are going by their previous moniker of The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu), where they will then undergo a process called ‘MuMufication’.

“MuMufication is the process whereby 23 grams of an individual’s ashes are fired in a brick (a Brick of Mu) and for this brick to become one of the 34,592 bricks of the People’s Pyramid,” the band explains.

For one day only next week, those aged 80 or over can purchase MuMufication for 99p, while those under 23 can sign up for £9.99 – a far cry from the regular price tag of £99

These Bricks of Mu will then become part of ‘The People’s Pyramid’, of which The KLF are set to break ground on November 23rd – ‘The Toxteth Day Of The Dead’ – in Liverpool.

“[The] Toxteth Day Of The Dead is not a caricature of any other day of the dead you may have heard of,” the band’s website explains. “It is the day in the calendar when the previous 12 months’ crop of Bricks of Mu are laid on the People’s Pyramid.”

While we’ve previously seen a company that presses the ashes of your musically-inclined loved one into a vinyl record, this is undoubtedly one of the most public and intriguing musical memorials of all time.

Although there’s no word yet as to when this will be completed (or how many people have expressed interest), nothing that The KLF do should ever come as a surprise by this point.
