Legion Music Festival will no longer be going ahead in 2017, organisers have confirmed. After experiencing a string of setbacks, organisers finally pulled the plug yesterday in a statement to fans made via social media.

“The organizers wish to thank all Aussie metal fans for their continued support of the Legion project over the last 10 months,” they wrote. Due to a number of business considerations, we have made the decision to not proceed with the proposed launch of Legion Music Fest in January 2017.”

Organisers have assured fans that “no transactions have been processed at all and no fans are out of pocket”. Organisers had been largely silent after a several international acts announced that they’d dropped out of the festival.

Of course, many feel the event had been doomed to fail from the start. Announced in the wake of the cancellation of Soundwave 2016, Legion hoped to raise funds for a new heavy music festival via a crowdfunding campaign.

Whilst things got off to a solid start, momentum soon slowed and the campaign was not successful. Organisers later announced that they had secured backing through other means and made further additions to the lineup.

Former Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah has taken to Twitter to defend the festival, writing, “I don’t understand people s****ing on [Legion Music Festival]. They tried to make something happen. It didn’t work. At least they had a go.”
