The Grammys signify a time of recognizing the year’s most creative and boundary-pushing acts, however, the awards ceremony hasn’t quite hit the mark when it comes to placing an emphasis on gender equality during this year’s event.

In an article recently published by Variety, it was revealed that Lorde was the only Album Of The Year nominee the Grammy’s failed to offer a solo performance slot during the ceremony. The Grammys did, however, approach the ‘Green Light’ singer to perform with other artists as part of a tribute to the late Tom Petty to which Lorde declined.

The article also details that each of the other Album of the Year nominees, that include Jay-Z Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, and Bruno Mars were all offered solo performances to showcase tracks from their nominated albums.

A bubbling undercurrent of sexism was also pointed out by Lorde’s mother, Sonja, who took to Twitter to highlight that in the last 6 years, only 9% of the 899 of Grammy nominees have been women. Topping off the call out of toxicity within the industry, she captioned the image with the line “this says it all”.

Despite the blatant snubbery on behalf of the Grammys, Lorde scooped up a pretty hefty showing on this year’s Hottest 100, with 2017’s smash ‘Green Light’ charting at number 6, whilst multiple other Melodrama hits featured in varied throughout the historic countdown.
