Last year, we saw the 30th anniversary of The Smiths’ breakup. In those bygone decades, many have begged, pleaded, and even asked nicely for a reunion of the seminal Manchester indie band. While reunion rumours have always been shot down rather quickly, it seems that fans might get some sort of brief view of what a reunion may sound like, with news that a few of the group’s members might be working on something together.

As Pitchfork notes, The Smiths’ drummer Mike Joyce recently shared an image to Facebook which indicates an upcoming collaborative effort from members of the group.

Consisting of little more than a black image with a musical note in the background, the image features the names of Rourke, Joyce, and Gannon, indicating Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce, and Craig Gannon, the bassist, drummer, and rhythm guitarist for The Smiths, respectively.

To most fans, Gannon is a rather little-known member of the group, performing with the group in 1986, appearing on the singles ‘Panic’ and ‘Ask’, and going on to work with Rourke and Joyce as musicians for frontman Morrissey’s first solo tracks in the late ’80s.

At this stage, details are almost unknown as to what could be coming in the future, but it would be safe to assume that we’ll be seeing some sort of collaborative group from these three famous musicians about halfway through 2018.

On The Smiths front, the famous pairing of Morrissey and Johnny Marr are no closer to repairing their friendship and agreeing on a full reunion of the group, but the last year did see the band release a few items of interest. In addition to a Record Store Day release of ‘The Boy With The Thorn In His Side’ (which featured a rather strong anti-Trump sentiment on the vinyl), the group also released a deluxe ressiue of their famed The Queen Is Dead album.

While we’ll happily take whatever sort of musical project that is on the way from Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce, and Craig Gannon, we’re still sort of holding out hope for a reunion from The Smiths, however pointless our hopes may be.
