For those uninitiated Melbourne’s Rolling Blackouts are a soft punk / tough pop group that go for the jugular. Influenced by Scandinavian post office pop and golden age Australian guitar music, they sing about unintended solo holidays, and teenage girls leaving home for the bright lights of Movie World.

The guys have just been handpicked to support Aussie legends The Preatures on the Victorian leg of their national tour and to celebrate they’ve curated us a mixtape.

The theme for this mix is ‘Spit Shine: Songs that spit and sparkle’ though we don’t know exactly why they went with this theme their mixtape making chops are on point – check out the impressive selection below and be sure to catch these guys when they hit the road in support of The Preatures (dates below)

Pulp – ‘Babies’

Joe R: “A great little young love ditty. I love the distain in Jarvis’s voice set against that debonair melody.”

Life Without Buildings – ‘PS Exclusive’

Tom: “I love her delivery. It shows how much you can do with just rhythm, phrasing and a bunch of ‘tude. No idea what she’s on about though.”

The Stranglers – ‘Walk on By’

Fran: “A cover that “re-purposes” the song. The Stranglers do the bitter dropkick with such conviction that you’ve got to get board.”

Television – ‘Elevation’

Marcel: “Sparring guitars jostling for attention, running the show.”

The Clean – ‘Point That Thing Somewhere Else’

Joe W: “Some of the best restrained guitar playing I’ve heard. The levee never breaks and you don’t ever want it to.”

Mental As Anything – ‘Berserk Warriors’

Joe R: “Dapper and dark. The “going-out” shirt, shoes on tight, plenty of cologne.”

Paul Kelly – ‘Randwick Bells’

Joe W: “This song leaves so much to the imagination. It’s a song about sex, but is it about wanting something more? Or heroin?”

Talking Heads -‘And She Was’

Marcel: “Such a neat song. Such pounding execution.”

The Embassy – ‘Some Indulgence’

Tom: “These guys had the great Swedish gift of creating a clean, simple concept and executing it with pine-scented Nordic precision. Yearning, melancholy pop brilliance. I think they work in a post-office now.”
