I can’t believe the news today, Bono’s hurt his back and can’t make it go away. How long, how long til it’s better? Yep, that’s the question in stadium rock land today after U2 were forced to cancel their headline set on Friday 25th of June at Glastonbury after Bono had emergency back surgery last weekend. The Irish band has also had to postpone at least sixteen dates on a lucrative US tour due to begin in July. In a statement on the band’s website Bono was quoted as saying “I’m heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special – we even wrote a song especially for the festival.”

An obviously disappointed festival organiser Michael Eavis wouldn’t be drawn on a potential replacement for their Pyramid Stage headline slot, saying “It was obvious from our telephone conversation that U2 are hugely disappointed. Clearly, they were looking forward to playing the Pyramid Stage as much as we were looking forward to watching them. At this point, we have no comment to make about possible replacements for U2’s Friday night slot. Instead, we would simply like to send Bono our very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.” Messageboard speculation is that Dizzee Rascal or stadium heirs Coldplay are ready to take their place.
