Barely more than a day after announcing that it will slash 47% of its worldwide workforce, internet antique Myspace has announce that it will be shuttering its Australian operations, the staff an apparent victim of online natural selection as Facebook continues its formidable rise to global ubiquity.

It appears that up to 40 local staff will be updating their CVs in preparation for the company shutting up shop on the 31st of January. Most of the affected staff were involved in the company’s ad sales and content operations which will no longer be directly handled locally, although owner News Limited may try to deploy some staff elsewhere.

Several staff will be kept on from the end of the month to assist in the transition to the new regime.
