Mike Starr, who played bass on Alice In Chains’ seminal 1992 album Dirt has been found dead of a suspected drug overdose. He was 44. Starr left the grunge icons just after the release of their breakthrough album, which saw the band hit the stratosphere. He largely disappeared from public view, while the band was rocked by the death of singer Layne Staley of an overdose in 2002.

Although the remaining members reignited the band in recent years, Starr was not involved. In January last year Starr appeared in a series of the grotesque VH-1 Celebrity Rehab show, while failing to overcome his addictions in the eye of the camera. Starr was arrested in Salt Lake City, Utah for an outstanding warrant on drugs charges about three weeks ago, as well as carrying unauthorised prescription drugs.

According to Salt Lake City police, where his body was found in a house, “There is nothing to indicate that this was foul play by another individual.”
