It’s been a wild ride for controversial LA rap outfit Odd Future lead by their fearless leader Tyler, The Creator. Once the darlings of the music scene many have already begun to turn their back on the group for what many see as homophobic lyrics, and the groups condoning of violence against women.

The issue was highlighted just a few weeks ago when during a Odd Future concert in New Orleans, member Left Brain was accused of punching a female photographer who was trying to shoot the show. Although at the time she declined to press charges, she later changed her mind after the group and their publicist called her a liar.

But in a recent interview with Spin, Tyler opened up about his new solo album due next year and that he thinks a change in direction is in order. “I wanna make the music I actually get all my influence from.” said the frontman while playing the reporter a bunch of jazz tunes. “I don’t know how, but I’m gonna try shit like this out. I’m gonna make a band or something.”

“Talking about rape and cutting bodies up, it just doesn’t interest me anymore,” he continued. “What interests me is making weird hippie music for people to get high to. With Wolf, I’ll brag a little bit more, talk about money and buying shit. But not like any other rapper, I’ll be a smart-ass about it. Now it’s just girls throwing themselves at me and shit, but I got a girl back home. People who want the first album again, I can’t do that. I was 18, broke as fuck. On my third album, I have money and I’m hanging out with my idols. I can’t rap about the same shit.”

But don’t start popping the champagne corks yet, Tyler is still releasing singles and videos from his first LP, Goblin, and his latest song up is ‘Bitch Suck Dick’, possibly his most controversial.

“It’s an ignorant-ass song,” says Tyler. “If I’m not listening to cheesy indie-jazzy rock shit, I’m listening to ignorant-ass rap shit like Waka Flocka and OJ Da Juiceman. And I made a song that sounds like that energy, but in my world. I think making a song about punching a bitch in the face is funny, because if you’re a regular person, just hearing that is fucking crazy, and 90 percent of the people know I’m just fucking around.”

Odd Future were recently removed from the New Zealand Big Day Out after backlash from gay activists had the company that runs the stadium where it is held pressure the promoters to remove the act.

They’ve also faced criticism from within the music industry, including their long running feud with gay sister act Tegan & Sarawho’ve called the group “repulsive and irresponsible”. Tyler at the time countered that the sisters simply needed “Some Hard Dick, Hit Me Up”.
