At least one person is confirmed to have died while three others have been critically injured following an incident at the Netherlands’ PinkPop Festival which saw a car drive into a crowd of people on Monday morning.
As Dutch News reports, the incident happened at around 4am Monday morning, just hours after Bruno Mars closed the three-day festival, with approximately 67,000 music fans in attendance each day.
Occurring near one of the festival’s three main campsites, reports indicate that a white Fiat Doblo ploughed into a crowd of people before driving off. While the driver was later arrested after a search, police have explained that a “technical investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision” is currently underway, meaning that it is not yet clear whether the incident was accidental or intentional.
In a statement on Facebook, festival organisers stated that “The organization of PinkPop is deeply shocked”, before noting that their thoughts are with the families of those involved in the incident.

Jelle Gunneweg, a reporter for RTV Rijnmond spoke to NOS Radio 1 News, explaining that festivities had continued at camping areas A and B until roughly 3am, noting that as people made their way back to their camping facilities following the final performance, traffic continued to flow freely as some chose to leave the site. “So at 4am you have drunk people and sober people all mixed up on the road,” Gunneweg explained.
A press conference is expected to follow soon to give further details on the incident and the current condition of the injured victims.
The 49th edition of the PinkPop Festival began on Friday, and featured a lineup that included the likes of The Offspring, Pearl Jam, A Perfect Circle, and Foo Fighters, just to name a few.
