There’s a rather mysterious new musical project on the way, and it seems to consist of past and present members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Earlier this week, an Instagram post appeared online that showed current Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer in the studio with ex-Pearl Jam/Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons.

“We get a lot of interesting cats that come through the Sun but its not everyday that we get the opportunity to share Studio C with 2 (count ’em!) Rock N Roll Hall of Famers and the engineer who gets their ideas out to the world,” explained the Instagram account for Californian studio Prairie Sun Recording.

“This week Josh Klinghoffer, the extraordinary multi-instrumentalist who has worked with Beck, Gnarls Barkley and has been playing guitar for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers for many years now took up residency in Studio C.”

“It was the addition of local resident Jack Irons to the mix that gave us our second HOF member,” they continued. “Jack has an interesting viewpoint having been a founding member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a member of Pearl Jam and the guy who passed the demo tape to Eddie Vedder and helped Pearl Jam become a reality.”

While very little information was shared in regards to this collaboration, fans began to speculate whether or not we’d be seeing some sort of Red Hot Chili Peppers/Pearl Jam dream team. Now, Josh Klinghoffer has attempted to set the record straight in an interview with the studio, revealing he’s just laying down new tracks with the help of the iconic drummer.

“I had a bit of a break this last year, and I felt like the break might be coming to a close, and I thought it would be wise to get some of these things recorded,” Josh Klinghoffer explained to Prairie Sun Recording (via Alternative Nation).

“My friend Jack Irons moved up to this neighborhood in the last year or so,” he continued. “When we were on tour together a year or so ago, he was in the process of moving. I thought, ‘There’s a studio up there I’m dying to see. I think it’s probably about 10 minutes from where you’re moving, would you record with me if I brought up a load of songs or idea or grooves to work on? Would you like to work on something with me?’”

At this stage, there’s no word as to what is exactly being recorded by Josh Klinghoffer and Jack Irons, nor any news as to other musicians who might be involved in this project.

This news also happens to come just a matter of days after the Red Hot Chili Peppers announced that they were set to hit the studio to record the follow-up to 2016’s The Getaway. Who knows, maybe Josh Klinghoffer will be able to convince Jack Irons to team up with his bandmates for the first time since 1988?
