Well, well, well – is Triple J and its listenership as hip and down with the kids as much as it thinks it is? An album released 11 years ago and said by one critic to be “little more than a slightly off-base perspective into the world of mid-90s American grunge” has been voted by Triple J listeners as the greatest Australian album of all time.

Beating out runners up Silverchair, who took out number two position with Frogstomp and AC/DC’s Back In Black at number three, Powderfinger’s 2000 album Odyssey No. 5 wasn’t loved by some critics, but the Australian public at the time disagreed, however, as the album went straight to Number One, taking out the 2001 ARIAs for “Album of the Year”, “Highest Selling Album”, “Best Rock Album”, “Best Cover Art”, and “Best Group”.

“My Happiness” won the award for “Single of the Year”, and has gone on to soundtrack every bogan wedding in Australia ever since. When Powderfinger broke up last year we said that nobody would care, but after selling hundreds of thousands of tickets for their farewell tour and then taking out this accolade, perhaps they are already planning their comeback tour?
