Depending on which side of the debate you’re on, phones at gigs can either be a brilliant way to help photograph those special moments, or they can be frustrating nuisances which make it harder for audiences to watch and enjoy shows. Now, as one fan has discovered, the sheer presence of a phone can cause you to become the enemy of an entire crowd.

During a recent show in California by metalcore legends Converge, one fan decided to use his presence on stage to try and get a selfie with singer Jacob Bannon. After all, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, right? The entire audience would be jealous of you being up there next to their hero while you get your own picture to remember! Well, in theory…

As an Instagram post of the whole incident shows, the fan inexplicably made his way onstage and attempted to grab himself a selfie. However, the second that the phone was pulled out, the band completely stopped played, giving this amateur photographer a chance to hear the deafening roar of the boos put forward by the crowd.

As bassist Nate Newton approached the stage invader, attempting to take his phone, the fan decided to quit while he was ahead and jump into the crowd, who proceeded to part like Moses at the Red Sea, leaving him to fall directly into the floor below.

While we certainly don’t condone stage invasions by photo-hungry fans, if it results in some hilarious action such as this, we sort of hope that more fans will try their luck. After all, it could result in one of the coolest photos you’ve ever seen, or it could result in thousands of folks around the world laughing at your misfortune. It’s win-win, really.
