Tone Deaf is proudly co-presenting Cherry Rock 011, featuring Jesse ‘The Devil’ Hughes, a reformed Died Pretty and Barrence Whitfield & The Savages. It also features appearances from some of Australia’s greatest rock n’ roll bands, so we thought we’d catch up with them and find out what makes Cherry Bar, AC/DC Lane and Melbourne so special to them.

Can you remember the first time you went to Cherry Bar? What did you like so much about it?

It reminded me of New York city and New Zealand all at the same time.

What’s the one song you hear at Cherry that makes you want to get up on stage and bust out the rock star moves?

“Back in Black” by AC/DC.

Growing up, what bands turned you in to the rock pigs you now are?

More a rock monkey than rock pig. I grew up listening to The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Motown, Creedence Clearwater Revival, David Bowie, Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Alice Cooper, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, New York 70’s Punk, some British 70’s Punk and I’m still trying to grow up ( Although this list reveals much about my age ).

We encourage responsible drinking, so if the owners shout you just the one drink – what would it be?

Tequila shot with a Corona beer chaser.

Which of the artists playing Cherry Rock 011 would you most like to collaborate with?

Already collaborated with 6ft Hick but wouldn’t mind working with guitarist Dan again.

If you were given a 20 minute DJ set at Cherry, what songs would you play to keep the crowd rocking?

“Consolation Prizes” Iggy Pop and James Williamson, “Happy” The Rolling Stones, “Powderfinger” Neil Young and Crazy Horse, “I wanna be sedated” The Ramones, “A Perfect Day” The Saints, “Vicious” Lou Reed. ( As usual I will extend my set by several minutes ).

We don’t promise you’ll get it all on the day at Cherry Rock 011, but what’s on your ideal rider?

Ted Nugent pinball machine, 1 dozen assorted bottles of Tequila, Meat killed and prepared by James Young, lots of condoms ( in case we don’t get balloons ), Balloons, 1 bottle of liquid helium, 1 Marijuana joint. I don’t really know what the other members of the band want but this stuff is good for me.

Everyone’s had a pretty wild night out at Cherry over the years. What happened on your wildest night – that we can print?

Just look at my latest album cover, says it all. There was 1 other occasion which I can’t remember but the bouncers can tell you what happened.
