After much eager anticipation and an equal amount of curious speculation, the details of the inaugural Legion Music Festival — which aims to replace the cancelled Soundwave festival — including a first round lineup, have finally been announced.

Australia’s first fan-funded heavy music festival, which was announced just last month, will feature performances from former Soundwave 2016 acts like Devil You Known, Darkest Hour, Darkc3ll, Battlecross, Caligula’s Horse, and more.

“Each of these bands have offered their truly amazing support and are ready to get loud and sweaty on the Legion stages,” write festival organisers in a statement, which promises that a full lineup, including unnamed headliners, is coming soon.

“Please know: We have many more set to announce and are very excited to bring you a complete line-up, including Headliners as soon as possible, this is just the start!” The festival will take place in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne with club mini-fests in Adelaide and Perth.

The whole thing is being funded by a Pozible campaign, with organisers saying they will only touch the funds raised after they hit their ambitious target of $3 million. Organisers have expressed a commitment to total transparency.

To inform punters of precisely where their pledges are going, organisers have unveiled a detailed budget which breaks down how the money raised will be spent if the campaign proves successful, e.g. $250,000 for ‘SITE COSTS’.

At the time of writing, the campaign has managed to raise an impressive $25,412, with 21 days to go to hit the target. A contribution of $125 guarantees admission to 2016 Legion Music Fest as well as pre-sale ticket allocation for every future Legion festival.

The festival will be taking place over March and April, with Devil You Know drummer John Sankey, who’s acted as the primary organiser behind the event, promising to put an emphasis on up-and-coming acts as well as established talent, particularly from Australia.

There’s more than 20 acts still to be announced, including several from Soundwave 2016. This isn’t just a one-off thing, either. If successful, Sankey and his team are hoping to make Legion a five-state festival by next year.
