New Kiwi supergroup The Adults are set to hit the stage for their much-anticipated first Australian live shows. Individually, Jon Toogood (Shihad), Shayne Carter (Dimmer, Straitjacket Fits) and Julia Deans (Fur Patrol) are three of New Zealand’s most respected musicians and they’ve joined together to create a new group with a new sound.

The Adults is the name Toogood has dubbed the project he stated work on last year while on a break  from Shihad. Putting together a wish list of some of his favourite New Zealand artists, he set out to write and record an album’s worth of collaborations. Released next month, the eponymous debut includes contributions from Ladi 6, Anika Moa, Tiki Taane, Ex-Shapeshifter’s Redford Grenell, Little Bushman’s Warren Maxwell, Ruban and Kody Neilson from the Mint Chicks, along with Carter, Deans and others. As you might expect from the eclectic contributors, the results vary from moody soulful moments to sonic explosions, incorporating favours of rock, and electronica, but vastly different from what you would expect in a Shihad release.

To take the show on the road, Toogood has enlisted two of his core collaborators, Shayne Carter and Julia Deans. As well as being great vocalists, all three are multi-instrumentalists, so there will be much swapping between guitars, keyboards and bass. “Everyone fights over the bass”, says Toogood, “because the bass lines are especially fun to play.” The record and the tour went bananas in New Zealand and you’d kinda expect it to do the same here.
