Ahead of rocking The Espy this Saturday as part of the Rock The Bay 2014 lineup – alongside Dallas Frasca, Mother’s Cake, and more – we caught up with The Love Junkies to get the lowdown on their native Perth.

Who better to give the skinny on the WA capital’s best bands than The Love Junkies? The trio scooped two hometown awards – the Rock Act Of The Year and Best Breakthrough Act – at the 2013 WAM Awards, while the Perth being handpicked by Triple J as one of the Top 20 Aussie artists to watch for 2014. So sit back and let The Love Junkies give you the their insider take on Perth’s best bands.

Pat Chow

Robbie Rumble, bassist: “If you love your Pixies-esque 90s grunge, Pat Chow is where it’s at. Ben kills it on the drunken guitar shreds. Andrew has some of the sexiest bass lines I’ve heard and drummer Jamie keeps it all tight as fuck. They write catchy, tasty 90s-inspired tunes and you get the feel Ben has been writing songs for a long time. If you get the chance, catch Ben playing a solo show around the traps. We’ve become pretty good mates with these dudes, and they work pretty damn hard. Make sure you check em out!”

Miles Away

RR: “Miles Away have been my favourite punk hardcore band since I first stepped into the world of music. It’s fast, energetic and makes you feel like punching someone and then giving them a hug. When I was in high school I used to go to these gigs and get my stage dives on. I guess I have this band to thank for giving me a gateway onto other things. I appreciate and listen to all different types of genres and it stems back to the days of punk and hardcore. Miles Away have released four studio albums and I seriously hope they never stop.”

The Moltens

RR: “We used to play gigs with these guys when we first entered the music scene a few years ago. They’re a pretty hard band to describe. Maybe Eddy Current Suppression Ring on drugs. They haven’t had any proper releases, but you can follow them on soundcloud and get all that washed out repetitive goodness. The lyrics are awesome. “Why do you wear desert boots/when you’ve never been to the desert?” is a personal and crowd favourite. Sadly they don’t play shows so much anymore, but a boy can dream.”

FOAM

Lewis Walsh, drums: “For ages FOAM have felt like some sort of sister band or something. If you like grunge then you need look no further. Every time I listen one of their songs I feel like just kicking shit. I guess that’s why they do as well as they do. They have these calm moments which sound really happy on the face of it and then out of nowhere it all kicks in and goes ape shit. i’m pretty sure the first time we saw them play they were 17 or something and I remember thinking damn them boys is good. I think everyone agrees that they are going places and to produce what they have so young is pretty damn impressive.”

Puck

LW: “I remember hearing about this band and everyone was going on about how heavy it was. So i went down to this gig to check them out and all I could keep thinking was I’ve never heard a 3 guys sound so full before. They sound heavier than just about anything in Perth. Watching that band develop is so interesting as well. They’ve developed this crazy sound and I love how they’ve been releasing records, it really reminds you what music is supposed to be all about. I love watching the face of someone who sees them for the first time as well. Its like they’ve just seen boobs for the first time. If you like distorted bass that makes your bowels move then Puck is the band.”

Frozen Ocean

LW: “I love Frozen Ocean. I think everyone does. They’re one of those bands that are seriously heavy and then funny as well. Kind of like a NOFX meets The Melvins crossed with Nirvana and a heavy dash of The Drones… or something. And they’re awesome live too. Whenever you go to a gig of their’s there’s a feeling of anything goes. Again they’re a band that are a reminder of what music can and should be. If you ever get the chance to see one of their “way too few and far between gigs”, definitely don’t miss it.”
