Sure we’ve heard about you before, but we think it’s time for Tone Deaf to get to know you a little better. Slip in to something comfortable while we put on some music, pour us a couple of drinks and turn the lights down low.

Who are you and what do you do in your act?

Cameron Avery, i play guitar and sing in The Growl

‘Fess up. What records have you stolen from your parent’s record collection and why?

Rumours, Fleetwood Mac….. the why is a given

What’s on heavy rotation on your iPod right now?

I dont have one

‘Home taping is killing the music business was the catch-cry of the record industry in the 1970s, but it managed to survive until now. What do you think is the difference between mates taping copies of friend’s records back in the 80s and 90s and file sharing now?

I think file sharing and downloading isn’t as bad as everyone says it is, music performance in its very beginning was a service where people would pay and entertainer to sing or play a song, like a jester in the first instances, but as soon as wax recording was invented and developed music became a commodity where people own the music and take it home, but now music is shared so freely and easily that pretty soon it could go back being a service. There is so many sub genre’s and small independent bands that have a platform now, and if that means your Justin Beibers and Lady GaGas sell a few less records then who really gives a shit. It just means you have to play more live shows.

You must answer this question honestly or we steal your rider. What was the first gig you went to? Where was it and what was the venue?

George from Playschool at the South Perth Community Centre, we had to leave half way through and go to the hospital because my brother stuck a tic tac up his nose and was crying minty tears.

What’s your favourite site to download music from and do you ever pay for it? Can we find any of your releases there?

I don’t download music

What artist made you want to pick up an instrument and/or sing?

Elvis Presley

Have you ever been arrested?

Yep.

Do you have any particular ritual before you go on stage, or even a lucky charm you take with you?

Not really, it’s usually just get whiskey then do a wee

What’s been your most outrageous rider request?

A small elephant to ride around on at Southbound, we didn’t get that but we got popcorn

Because it’s more fun to do things together, which living Australian artist would you most like to collaborate with? Tell us why?

I’ve already done it, I did an album with one of my closest friends Nick Allbrook which will come out soon, and Kevin and i are trying to find some time to do some stuff in the next ….whenever we’re free, so those two guys, or a band from Perth called Usurper of Modern Medicine.

Right, let’s get really intimate. Tell us what releases you have that we can listen to with the lights down low, or even better, where we can see you play in person next.

We’ve only got one release, it’s an EP called Cleaver Lever, and were playing…..
