The Preatures’ Gideon Bensen has just unveiled the first single from his new solo project, ‘All New Low’, produced by Tony Buchen (Montaigne, Mansionair) and set for release via Bensen’s own record label, Puncture Records.

“’All New Low’, took everything out of me,” said Gideon. “While on tour with The Preatures, I found myself working on tracks more and more, up at all hours, in transit, in hotel rooms, wherever I could setup. I was obsessed.”

“I felt like I wanted to push myself more. I had some time in Sydney between tours so I contacted my old friend and producer, Tony Buchen with some songs and ideas for an 80’s/90’s new wave/soul record. I told him, ‘If I do it I have to go all out. I don’t want to sound like I ever have before’.”

As evidenced in the track, the recording of ‘All New Low’ was heavily influenced by hip-hop and beat making. “It’s a world I never really explored until now,” he said. “I was inspired by acts like N.W.A, Bomb da Bass, Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus and D’Angelo’s Black Messiah and wanted to incorporate that into what I was doing”.

Bensen got some help from friend Megan Washington, who performed backing vocals; bandmate Jack Moffitt on guitar; and Carlos Adura of The Tambourine Girls on drums. The track was mixed by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, The Faint) and mastered by Leon Zervos (Wu Tang Clan, Beastie Boys).

Gideon will be celebrating the release of his debut solo single by playing one off shows in Melbourne and Sydney in February – tickets are on sale now. Gideon will also be unveiling a debut EP in February.
