With so much new music floating around the interwebs, sometimes it’s hard to dig a little deeper and find out more about a promising artist.

That’s why The Profile is breaking it down for you. The Pitch takes care of the nitty gritty factual bits, The Plot serves as a Q & A with the artist, and The Plug is where you can go for more.

The Pitch

Off the back of a massive 2013, The Kite String Tangle (aka Danny Harley) is soon to be heading to the US to play several showcases at the notorious SXSW music showcase in Austin, Texas.

Having secured a place in Triple J’s ‘Next Crop’ for 2014 and Taking out the Triple J Unearthed spot at the inaugural Byron Bay Falls Festival, The Kite String Tangle’s live show is currently making its way to most major cities. Regarded as a hot ticket in Australia, the last TKST tour sold out in a couple of weeks and more shows and venue upgrades were added…. which also sold out.

The last single ‘Given The Chance’ was a massive success in 2013 and gained huge traction with high rotation on radio before landing at #19 on the Triple J Hottest 100. Since then Harley has signed with US booking agent Tom Windish (Lorde, The XX, Gotye etc.) of ‘The Windish Agency’ and  ‘Given The Chance’ has cracked over 920,000 plays on SoundCloud and 500,000 streams on Spotify and now an impending EP is being buzzed about.

Following support tours with MS MR, Gold Panda, RÜFÜS and Owl Eyes in 2013, the new year looks to welcome a new era for The Kite String Tangle with a hotly anticipated debut EP, headline tours, and a whole host of surprises in the works.

The Plot

Hometown:
“I live in Brisbane but have always moved around a fair bit and have also lived in the UK. I think I draw most inspiration from the actual travel and being in transit. It’s quite a reflective time I think. Also I’ve lived in many different settings like inner city drizzly cold places and massive acreage with ride on lawn mowers. I think the vastly changing surroundings can be a pretty good source of inspiration and promote different moods too.”

Influences:
“I’ve been into a lot of new stuff lately. Some being: Blood Orange, Bonobo, Purity Ring, Classixx, FKA, Yeasayer, I also like this book of surreal visuals [called codex seraphininanus] check it out here.

Favourite local act:
“From Brisbane: probably MTNS or The Belligerents. From Australia: I love RÜFÜS and MOVEMENT.”

What’s your gear setup like:
“It’s sort of made up of a whole bunch of samplers and MIDI controllers and vocal effects. Sometimes I feel like I’m flying a plane when I play.”

First gig you ever played:
“In a school hall in the UK playing bass in a pop punk band when I was 12 – I was much cooler when I was 12.”

Worst gig you ever played:
“Funnily enough it was on Australia Day in Coffs Harbour supporting Hey Geronimo with my other band Pigeon. We drove four hours to Coffs to play and the Hottest 100 went way over time and we only got to play one song. And it rained. It sucked.”

Best gig you’ve ever been to:
“Sufjan Stevens at The Tivoli in Brisbane. It was a crazy experience and I was completely engaged the entire show. Mind blowing stuff and I’m sure anyone else who went would agree.”

Dream rider:
“Some fine red wine, maybe some vodka, freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juice and a long walk on the beach at sunset.”

Favourite local:
“Local place to drink? Maybe Kerbside? Well usually I end up anywhere in the valley that has music such as Oh Hello, Alhambra, Black Bear Lodge or The Zoo and all nights end at Ric’s because that’s just the rules.”
