Everybody knows that Patience Hodgson, the jubilant singer for Brisbane indie poppets The Grates, has got a style that’s uniquely her own.

From her colourful array of stage costumes to great fashion choices, the girl’s got great taste, and now she’s sharing a slice of her distinctive sensibilities with her fans via a new online project promising a “magical craft ride through pom pom hills, no-sew fabric bow ravines and up to the highest heights of petite party hats.”

This week saw the premiere of new web series, Fancy Free, in which The Grates frontwoman goes all ‘crafternoon’ in a series of instructional craft videos demonstrating how to make all kinds of homespun delights fit for the pages of Frankie magazine, as The Music reports.

The first Fancy Free webisode – of eight over as many weeks – sets the fanciful tone for the series and finds Hogdson co-starring with her good mate (and Brisbane designer/photographer) Rachel Burke, showing you how to put together a delightful bow with a few simple items – all delivered in the cutest and coolest of trimmings.

Filmed in the spareroom of the singer’s own house, Fancy Free is also soundtracked with new music written and performed by fellow Grate (and husband) John Patterson.

That technically makes it first new music from The Grates since 2011’s Secret Rituals. Aside from a few festival performances, such as Queenscliff Music Festival and Red Deer last year, plus a guest spot with Chance Waters from Hodgson all has been quite on The Grates front. But since Hogson and Patterson have been preoccupied with getting married and running their delightfully fitted café-come-live music, you can hardly be mad at their extra-curricular pursuits.

Break out the hot glue gun (but ask your parents first) and make your very own Hodgson-endorsed fashion knot with the below Fancy Free video.
