Loving live music isn’t just about attending music festivals and seeing an international artist’s massive arena show. Even the biggest of big-name headliners started in the trenches, on the sticky carpets and bandrooms of your local bars and pubs – which is exactly where you should be if you want to discover your new favourite band or venue. Here’s our picks for this week’s best local gigs from Aussie talent – from Perth to the East Coast – and all for the price of a good meal.

Pikelet

Where? The Toff In Town, Level 2, Curtin House, 252 Swanston St, Melbourne
When? Sunday May 11th, 7:00pm
Why? If you’re looking for the best gift possible for Mother’s Day, why not drag the old duck to The Toff and catch the spacey beats of Pikelet? The night has been described by the Melbourne outfit themselves, “this is going to be a sorta seeya later maybe see what happens kinda gig. Come hang with us just in case this is the end.” If this is to be the untimely (but surely unlikely) end, Pikelet are doing it in style as Angel Eyes, True Strength and Alyx Dennison round out the bill to what will be a cracking evening. We’re certain after this set, Mum will bump you right to the top of her favourite kids list!
