Cryptocurrency we’re sure, was a hot topic over the dinner tables of many families this Christmas break, causing plenty of disputes between sage advice giving Uncles and their savvy millennial relos who seem to be on different economic wavelengths.

Whilst those who understand what exactly a Bitcoin is and what its functions are, come few and far between, Thundamental’s member PON CHO seems to have a pretty tight grasp on the subject matter. The Sydney muso has recently told triple j that he’ll be focusing on the Cryptocurrency game “for a bit”, putting his musical endeavors to the side.

“[I] just took a bit of a punt back when Bitcoin was about $4K a pop, that was only like three months ago or something, and took a punt with a couple other different cryptocurrencies and some of those punts paid off. And I kind of reached this point where I was like well maybe I should just do this for a bit.”

He went on to discuss the financial tribulations musicians faced, detailing that Bitcoin investments can provide a certain level of stability.

“I’ve always had a bit of a thing against that and I realised even further doing my solo project and having all this great success I guess you would call it and still kind of finding myself stressing out about finances and stressing out about long-term security and stability and stuff like that.”

PON CHO also further explained how investments in Bitcoins act as a silent protest against finance monoliths who control the economy.

“I do it for thrills, I do it for stability and I do it kind of in a weird activisty way and I think that’s what people don’t understand about Bitcoin, it’s people taking control of their money, it’s decentralising things in general,” he said.

“To me it doesn’t make sense that there is one central authority that we give all our money to and the gives us all our money and then we’re allowed to trade with that and they decide the interest rates and then suddenly all that stuff whereas you know if we get if we have the power to make decisions with money then that’s a cool thing.”

Even though PON CHO’s solo career outside the much loved Aussie hip hop crew has fared well, his reasons for stepping back from music stem beyond just the thrill of the mysterious Bitcoin.

“Music’s always something that I’ve loved and something that I’ll do for me but I kind of ended up making music for everyone else and not for myself”
