There is little debate over whether singer songwriter Steve Kilbey is an Australian music legend. Steve moved to Australia at the age of three and 15 years later formed the iconic Aussie rock group The Church, a band that 30 years after formation still remain as relevant as ever.

Steve is currently on tour alongside Soft Boys (UK) frontman Robyn Hitchcock. Between Steve and Robyn they have released over 100 albums, which is a good display of how much these two men have contributed to the alternative music landscape over the past 3 decades. We asked Steve to give us a run down of who he believes to be today’s most important local acts.

The Morning Night

“They opened for me on a tour. Shoegazer-ish dreamy pop dreamed up by wunderkid Adrian Hoffman. Their albums produced by a guy from the BJM. Adrian is accomplished singer and guitarist”

Say Lou Lou

“My own daughters Elektra and Miranda. The most hyped band in existence. They have their achingly beautiful debut single ‘Maybe You’ which rocketed them to international acclaim. Album coming soon.”

The Basics

“This is wally from Gotye. His day gig, Incredible songs incredible harmonies and the brilliant voice of wally himself. Forget Gotye and dig the Basics!”

The Preatures

“I discovered these guys on Rockwiz although I had noted that there was a huge buzz around them. Izzy the singer so nailed her part of Evie and was a charming person to work with, exuding an unbelievable star quality which reminded me a little of my own daughters in Say Lou Lou. I checked some of their videos and was mightily impressed by the succinct songwriting and the tightness of the whole thing. A visit by their drummer Luke to the latest Church sessions only confirms their total grooviness.”
