Trent Reznor has showed off his softer side, sharing a personally-curated playlist of atmospheric tunes that are designed to be listened to when you’re alone.

Let’s face it, when you first think of Trent Reznor (and Nine Inch Nails, by extension), you rarely think of atmospheric, subdued tunes, do you? No, normally the first thing that comes to mind might by the sprawling, pounding beats in songs like ‘March Of The Pigs’, or a young Reznor screaming the highly NSFW lyric of “fist fuck”, from his Grammy Award-winning tune ‘Wish’. However, as time goes on, even the most angry and frenetic of musicians tend to mellow out.

In recent years, Trent Reznor has at times put Nine Inch Nails on the back-burner to work with collaborator Atticus Ross on a series of soundtracks. In fact, if you’ve hit up the cinema to see Gone GirlThe Social Network, or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, then that was Trent Reznor providing the backing music.

Taking to Facebook this week, Trent Reznor shared a playlist titled “Better Alone”. Consisting of some of Nine Inch Nails’ more subdued cuts and the soundtrack work composed with Atticus Ross, this is a far cry from the industrial tunes that Reznor made a name for himself with in the ’90s.

“Trent Reznor curates a playlist of music from his catalog intended for listening in solitude,” the playlist’s description reads. “Darkness optional but recommended.”

While the tunes are certainly rather soothing, we do warn you that these tunes tend to occasionally move towards a more unsettling sound at times, so if you’re looking for something more uplifting, maybe look elsewhere. However, if you’re keen on the sort of atmospheric soundscapes and emotive themes found in Reznor’s soundtracks, then this might be right up your alley.
