A lot can happen over the weekend, but just like us we imagine you’re pretty busy over the weekend attending gigs, hanging out with friends, and generally chilling out. But sometimes, important things do happen. So come Monday morning we’ll be delivering to you the best of what you missed over the weekend, so you can continue to enjoy your time off.

New Foo Fighters Album Finished, Due 2014

The hardworking Dave Grohl and his merry band of Foo Fighters have revealed that the band’s record follow-up to 2011’s Wasting Light is not only complete, but could be ready for release early next year. Following on from saying that the band had been “working overtime” on the new LP last month, the ‘nicest man in rock’ now tells XFM in an interview that all the songs are written and ready to be recorded. “we have been in our studio writing and in the past few weeks, we’ve written an album,” he said. “And we are going to make this album in a way that no one’s ever done before, and we’re pretty excited about it.” His comments echoed his previous statements that the Foo Fighters’ latest would “not be a conventional record.”

“It’s a little way off – it’s not ready to happen right now, but I think next year is going to be a really big year for the Foo Fighters without question,” says Grohl. “It’s going to be great, I can’t wait.” Additionally, guitarist Chris Shiflett has now told Rolling Stone that: “We actually just started making a new Foo Fighters record within the last few weeks. We’ve started rehearsing.” The guitarist added: “It was a very short hiatus. We’re going to start recording the new Foo Fighters record at the beginning of next year.” (via NME)

Unreleased Material From The Mars Volta Leaks Online, Vocalist Trolls Music Media

The Mars Volta’s core twosome may have tore the band apart in January, but given the band’s prolific work rate and cult-like fanbase it was only a matter of time before some unreleased material started popping up. Fans hve indulged in a feeding frenzy over the weekend as a 15 track collection of nearly 80 minutes of music – available here – was leaked on popular Mars Volta fansite The ComatoriumWith a bunch of placeholder names (eg. ‘,14’ ‘eog-3’, ‘s[fqw’) and little information as to the origins of the material, it’s a real mixed bag. But former drummer Thomas Pridgen confirmed its veracity in a Facebook post. But almost better than the Mars Volta treasure trove of b-sides, demos, and unheard material was the trolling of former vocalist Cedric Bixler Zavala who tweeted:

It wasn’t long before the press ran with the ridiculous David Guetta joke, treating it as legitimate while Bixler-Zavala milked the duped media for all they were worth in a series of humorously bizarre (and bizarrely humorous) on his twitter (one of many highlights: “Our 1st producer choice was @drake but during our TMV band meeting with Amanda Bynes (all band meetings were w/ Amanda) he was deemed 2 ugly”). Meanwhile the former Mars Volta singer recently took his new project Zavalaz out on the road for their live debut, while his former co-Volta member, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, continues work with his band Bosnian Rainbows. Test How Old Your Ears Are With This Hearing Test

Still pulling up from the weekend? Don’t feel as youthful as you used to? Well then you might want to skip this online test which finds out just how over the hill your ears are. A fun little animation put together by the people at Asap Sciencethe video plays a series of higher and higher frequencies to test the sensitivity of your hearing and also gives a handy explanation for how the ear can be damaged by sound over time (hint: loud volumes bad). Take note: you must watch in 1080p resolution and with a pair of headphones to get the most accurate results, and if you’re over 20 but have the hearing of an octogenerian, then maybe it’s time to invest in a pair of earplugs for your next metal concert. KISS Purchase AFL Team

Steady on, the glam rock legends haven’t purchased your beloved Aussie Rules team and caked them up in matching make-up. That’s AFL as in American Football League, with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley among the shared owners of a new Los Angeles football team, which will join the league in March 2014, named LA KISS, which will used the band’s logo while season tickets will also be available with a free KISS concert (ever the enterprisers). “As a fast-paced, high-action band, this partnership with the AFL was an obvious fit for us,” Gene Simmons told ESPN. “Attending an LA KISS game in 2014 will be similar to a live KISS show, with thrilling, heart-pounding action.” Stanley also commended the AFL’s status in American football as an alternative to the dominant NFL league. “The whole idea of an alternative to what has perhaps become a corporate sport is very intriguing, and resonates with us,” said the guitarist. “We’ve always tried to be a band that relates to everybody, and the AFL is built on that whole premise.” (via Billboard)

Prince Loves Twitter, Teases New Singles

Prince has been having a lot of fun with his new all-female band, 3rd Eye Girl, including flash releasing material online, recording awesome covers, and perming up a nice new afro. The Purple One has also been using the group’s official twitter handle lately as his own personal online space, and in-between instagramming his meals and posting memes (see, he’s just like everyone else), he’s also used as the place to tease a bunch of new material, offering audio previews of news singles available on 3rdeyegirl.com including slinky new funk workout ‘Groovy Potential’ and the amazing cover art for new track ‘Breakfast Can Wait’, which features comedian Dave Chappelle dressed as Prince with a stack of pancakes – inspired by a sketch from The Chapelle Show. Listen to the track and marvel at the ridiculous single cover below. (via Consequence Of Sound)
