Portland’s own Wild Flag have announced they will be playing select sideshows while in Australia for Meredith Festival next march.

Wild Flag is Carrie Brownstein, Janet Weiss, Mary Timony and Rebecca Cole. Between them, they have played in some acclaimed and influential bands over the years, including Sleater-Kinney, Helium, The Minders and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks to name just a few.

Forming in 2010 without a bassist (like Sleater-Kinney), Wild Flag have put the emphasis squarely on grappling guitar play, splashy melodies and hard-charging drums. After a year of road testing their songs in tiny clubs and various other live arenas, the band finally recorded their self-titled debut record in Sacramento in early 2011, and released the album to fervent critical acclaim in Australia this past September.

With interlocking guitarists Timony and Brownstein taking turns singing, and Weiss on Drums and Cole on keyboards, this super-group offering is as cohesive as it is exuberant. From the mod frenzy of Romance to the psych-tinged Glass Tambourine, Wild Flag ring out loud and clear on their self-titled debut – there are no wasted moments here.

Friday 9 March – Corner Hotel – Melbourne.

Sunday 11 March – The Zoo – Brisbane.

Tuesday 13 March – Manning Bar – Sydney.
