It’s rare that a (semi) fictional band can have so much influence on the world of music, but when Spinal Tap first came onto the scene in the late ’70s, it seems that they made some pretty diehard fans by the way of Aussie rock legends You Am I.

Now, 34 years after the release of the seminal mockumentary This Is Spın̈al Tap, You Am I are paying tribute to one of rock’s most influential groups by hitting the road and covering the band’s classic tracks, as Double J reports.

“One out of every four and a half interviews has included the question ‘Have you ever had a Spinal Tap moment?’. Well sweet lord, any band worth their talc has, and we, whether on talc or not, have had more ‘Tap moments’ than liquid dinners,” explained You Am I.

“So, we have thrown down the gauntlet, unto ourselves, under the auspices of Montgomery Glitterbest the Third our perfectly adequate manager: why not have ONE BIG SPINAL TAP moment. And then do it again.”

“The sounds and the smells of Tap done by our band (the looks are yours to fuss with),” You Am I continued. “We love the songs of Tap, they speak of the mighty, meaty and manky elements of the Majesty Of Rock. Hip hip hooray, and so say all of us. TAP INTO AUSTRALIA!”

So if you’re keen on seeing one of Australia’s most irreverent rock groups paying homage to one of rock’s most hilariously funny fictional groups, then be sure to head out and see You Am I on their upcoming tour.
